One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

"He/She never told us that he/she loved us." - A common eulogy said by children of conservative parents Seems like many of us can attest to this. Just when we get too comfortable living with the same person that we go about our daily grind and get lazy in building our relationship, we start wondering if this person actually loved us. A moment ago, I was caught offguard when I wondered the same thing about God. Does He really love me? He doesn't seem to tell me so. Darn... I must be getting old and forgetful. John 3:16 immediately pops into my mind, clear as day. Then, "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." After overcomplicating my life for years, what I could use right now is simple. Back to basics, it is. Thank you, God.

Biblical Parenting

Ephesians 6 (NIV) 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Children Learn What They Live   If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy. If a child lives with jealousy, he learns to feel guilty. If a child lives with impropriety, he learns to feel shame. If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement he learns confidence If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate. He a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval, he...

The Politics of Heroes

Image
I like superheroes. I really do. So when faced with the challenge of deciding which hero to stand behind, I am at a loss. As you probably know by now, the two major superhero comic book and graphic novel companies are DC and Marvel. They both have their niche areas: DC is more dark and gritty and is not afraid to dig out the dirty details of the heroes' past. On TV, the cartoons appear cute and innocent (e.g. Teen Titans) enough until you are horrified by the actual truths about those characters when you grow older. They make great TV franchises but sub-par movies (with occasional exceptions like The Dark Knight trilogy). They keep rebooting Superman and Batman until the audience are forced to recognise and accept their existence. Honestly, I really liked The Justice League cartoons and had hoped for a Justice League movie for a long time. I even went ahead to read other DC comic series and coincidentally chanced upon The Legion of Superheroes series after catchin...

Daredevil S1E1-10

Proverbs 25 26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted well are the righteous who give way to the wicked. 27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep. 28 Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. What started off as a slow-paced drama suddenly spirals rapidly into the shadows of morality at episodes 8 and 9, and it is awesome so far. Wilson Fisk has proven himself to be an adversary who can inspire awe and yet be utterly detestable. As for Matt, Karen and Foggy, we see them struggling between the lines of righteousness and evil as they strive to uphold justice in Hell's Kitchen. Can they expose the king of diamonds and live to tell the tale? Are the costs of their choices worth it?

Prison Break - The Final Break

Image
After a long hiatus from binge-watching Prison Break, I feel very relieved that I have finally finished watching all four seasons of it. Seasons 3 and 4 were grueling, but the end of the journey was worth it. Allow me to share this stunning picture spotted on Tumblr. Credits to whoever made this gorgeous piece. What else do I love about Prison Break? The deep friendship between the prison breakouts. My favourite characters? Sucre and Mahone. Seriously, where can you even find someone in a prison as loyal as Sucre?       Credits:  Broken Prisons

Quid Pro Quo

"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." - Alphonse Elric “It occurs to me you know that any one of these tools could have been the end of me last night, but you attacked me with fists and booted feet. So you didn’t want to kill me, you just wanted to hurt me. You want to do it again? ... I’m talking about reciprocity; I’m talking about quid pro quo. If you submit to my questions, I submit to a blow from this wrench. You are not certain that I hurt Maria, are you? But if you are open to suggestions I offer my hand. Come on, you are going to break any number of bones. The pain’s going to be excruciating.”  “It’s interesting, Watson, spending the night in a cell. I’m reminded that they are good places for bad people.”  - Sherlock Holmes (Elementary...

Happy Birthday!

Psalm 139 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts,a God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you. I thank and praise you, Lord, for the lovely bunch of colleagues, friends and family in my life. Looking back at my past self and the depressing moments then, I never would have imagined all the joy I feel today. I can never thank God enough for all the people who have seen me through my darkest times: - my school mates - my online church famil...

Elementary S1-3 Review

Image
Ice-cream - a temporary means of catharsis Just like the ice-cream, Elementary is a guilty pleasure. Before I start my review of the series, I have to say that I enjoy watching crime drama in general, so I might be biased towards most crime drama series. Nonetheless, I'll do my best. Hits Brilliant acting by Sherlock and Watson (Jonny Lee Miller must have a memory palace, because I don't know how one can ramble so many lines without a hitch. Benedict Cumberbatch may be popular, but he hasn't done 3x24 40-min episodes of Sherlock yet, which would be awesome.) Plenty of character development for the main three (Sherlock, Watson and Bell) The introduction of Sherlock's protege (i.e. the potential rivalry) Subtle jokes that usually slip right under the radar Joan Watson's timeless wardrobe Simple but effective soundtrack Rich backdrops/crime scenes Misses The types of crime are becoming either more boring or more unbelievable, some of them r...

Arslan Senki

Image
Arslan Senki has quickly risen to the top of my watchlist priority in recent weeks. Hits: Overpowered characters like Daryun and Narsus (similar in personality to Kurogane & Faye from Tsubasa Chronicle) The "Hakuouki"-like ED. Down-to-earth and good-natured Arslan (who behaves like Alphonse in Edward's body from Fullmetal Alchemist). Fantastic backdrops and character designs similar to FMA: Brotherhood. Arakawa Hiromu created its manga version, which is very promising. With Narsus around, you can be sure that battle strategies are involved. Misses: The disappointing OP by Uverworld. Overpowered main team. Tsubasa Chronicle was like that too, only with 3 OP characters. Sakura played the wallflower for most of the episodes, anyway.

Death Parade & Speculation

Image
Before diving into the main topic, my compliments first and foremost to MADHOUSE Inc. for producing animes that I have no regrets coming across: Cardcaptor Sakura Chihayafuru Death Billiards Death Parade The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Monster Parasyte Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin Supernatural: The Animation Tokyo Godfathers Please spare a moment to look at this ravishing picture of a cube doll. Okay, jokes aside, I must say that this series has quickly become something I look forward to this season. If you have not watched Death Billiards before starting this series, you are highly encouraged to. So, how would I describe Death Parade? It's like a chill party with Jigoku Shoujo where the people who have passed on play games to decide their fate instead of facing the full wrath of the judge. The Offer of Life or Death   11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. 12 It is not up in heaven, ...

A Foreboding of Lisbon's Death?

Image
My speculation after watching The Mentalist ( Season 7 Episode 8 The Whites of His Eyes & Episode 9 Copper Bullet) I absolutely adore all the Jisbon scenes so far. Their moments are cute and yet still show that respect and affection for each other. But after these episodes revealed Jane's anxiety about losing Lisbon, I have this bad feeling that the show might go down the dark path and may quite possibly kill Lisbon off, going back full circle to the beginning of The Mentalist and leaving Jane in a state of grief and revenge. Perhaps that's what the deserting viewers secretly want - that ongoing sense of tension during the Red John arc. Well, it might be best to just enjoy that little slice of rainbow before it's gone.
