Sober Encouragement

Image
"I’ve been feeling a little bit down of late. It’s the process of maintaining my sobriety. It’s repetitive and it’s relentless and above all it’s tedious. When I left rehab, I accepted your influence. I committed to my recovery and now two years in I find myself asking: Is this it? My sobriety is simply a grind. It’s just this leaky faucet which requires constant maintenance and in return offers only not to drip. [...] I used to imagine that a relapse would be the climax to some grand drama. Now I think that if I were to use drugs again it would in fact be an anticlimax, the impious surrender to the incessant ‘drip, drip, drip’ of existence. I will be fine. It’s just a temporary malaise." - Sherlock Holmes

Murphy's Law

Anything that can go wrong... 1. I messed up in my menial role of stage curtain manager today. I closed the curtains on the emcees not once, but three times or more. *facepalm* 2. I played the piano offbeat and offkey during a worship session. I wanted to dig a hole and bury myself. Can I erase that memory now? 3. I almost fell asleep in the middle of a conversation. The temperature was so cool - perfect for hibernation. DOH!

The Woodlawn Miracle

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King Jr. So I just watched a truly encouraging and motivating film called 'Woodlawn'. The theme? Agape love. The answer which could potentially solve almost all of the world's problems sounds simple enough, but it directly opposes the rules of this world. Forgiving and loving your enemies may be difficult, but after seeing this film, the hope of seeing a multitude of all nations of the world (including changed enemies) united in Christ is really something to look forward to.

Broadchurch Review

I've completed season 1 and it is an all-round intense crime drama. Season 2 deals more with the justice system and courtroom scenes but is still just as complex as the first. Hits: + an incredible cast + realistic acting + breathtaking scenery + complex characters Misses: - the slow motion scenes and overhanging suspense may be overwhelming or draggy for some Definitely worth a watch.

Music Shuffle Soundtrack of 2016

[A Buzzfeed Video Challenge] Let your songlist play randomly. Record the first 7 songs you hear. Here's mine: 1. Opening song as you wake up Kansas - Carry on my wayward son (All the SPN feels are coming back already.) 2. On your way to school or work Spider-man Unlimited Theme (This was from an AU spin-off cartoon that is similar to TMNT: Fast Forward.) 3. Hanging out with your friends Hiroyuki Sawano[nzk]: mizuki - Aliez (Aldnoah.Zero, such wasted potential. It's too bad your awesome soundtrack couldn't make up for your plot holes and flawed character logic.) 4. When you're around your crush OneRepublic - All We Are 5. When you hit a rough patch Uverworld - Gekidou (All that D.Gray-Man nostalgia. It was great while it lasted.) 6. When you overcome an obstacle Egoist feat. Aimer - ninelie (A great ending song which featured in an anime about a zombie apocalypse called "Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress". It was decent.) ...

Different Race

Are children colour-blind to race? Not at all. In fact, I can recall my first encounter with a classmate of a different race between ages 7-8. For no apparent reason, my community preschool was made up of the majority race, so I had no prior encounters with a minority race. The pupils seated in my group in class were wondering why one of the pupils had darker skin than the rest of us. Some even questioned if she had washed her hands before school started and asked her to go to the washroom to try washing off the dirt. That poor child actually took our word for it and went to the washroom a couple of times. The conversation was all said innocently, but it would sound really awful and offensive to adults. Why did we doubt her actual skin colour? Because we noticed that her palms were much fairer than the top of her hands, so we assumed that her palm colour was her actual skin colour. Our teacher later clarified that everyone has pigments (I think this word would have went right over m...

Hi 5 Legacy

Production costs, cast salaries and a whole host of other considerations make Hi 5 what it is today. Boasting more than 10 seasons is no easy feat. It's even more impressive that the original cast stayed onboard for 5 seasons or more. It was painful to see them go. What happened offset that made them leave seemed like what happened with the original Power Rangers cast - it was cheaper to hire young, fresh faces. As much as I dislike how artificial and more Candyland-like the newer seasons look and feel, I still have to hand it to the new cast for being brave and staying strong in standing up to all the negativity. As an adult, I'm glad that the Hi 5 legacy continues thus far so that each generation has great educational music and a diverse group of role models to grow up with. Let's hope that everyone working on and off the Hi 5 set get along wonderfully so that the children get to see genuine smiles on the cast's faces.

Late for an Exam

While correcting a pupil's work, I ended up writing a paragraph of my own. I sprinted past several eggshell-coloured blocks of flats,  sidestepped past startled onlookers at the bus stop before dashing through the dull green metal gates. With my heart pounding in my chest, I plopped myself down onto my seat, next to Ben, my best friend. With a plump face and mouth agape, he started at me with incredulous awe. "Are you crazy, Sam? Why are you so late for the exam?" he mouthed. Before I could respond, the school bell rang. "You may begin," the teacher said. Oh boy.
