When Hard Work Paid Off

Re:  The Odysseus Trap by Sahil Bloom The underrated skill that most highly successful and wealthy people will not tell you is the amount of all-nighters they pulled to build their lofty, ambitious dreams until they could finally take a step back and let their systems run on autopilot. As the saying goes, "There are no shortcuts to success." As I look back on my life, while there were periods of painful striving, I probably wouldn't have attained the mastery as soon as I did had I not ground in the hours and tried and failed miserably. And 10 years feels like a considerably long waste of time to learn the life lessons that youngsters these days learn at even younger and younger ages, thanks to access to quality education. I'm a late bloomer, as you can tell. Had I known about personal finance and productivity tips earlier, I would have taken a shorter time to get here. Welp, too late to turn back time.

Summary of The Paradox of Self-Awareness by Mark Manson

The Paradox of Self-Awareness Positive and Negative Effects 🌟 Self-awareness can be harmful if taken to excess 🌟 Like medicine, too much self-awareness can be detrimental to our well-being Therapy and Context 🔎 The value of therapy lies in the context and environment it provides 🔎 Type of therapy is not as important as the act of seeking therapy 🔎 Journaling can be an effective alternative to therapy in providing a non-judgmental setting The Consciousness Paradox 🔬 Consciousness can be divided into the subject and object 🔬 When we focus on ourselves, our thoughts and feelings become the object of our consciousness 🔬 Detaching ourselves from our thoughts and feelings helps us put them into perspective Pathologising the Normal 🤔 Unhealthy self-awareness may lead to self-delusion and inflating small problems 🤔 An overemphasis on awareness of mental health issues can lead to a decrease in overall mental health Advice for Overwhelmed Self-Awareness ✋ Stop seeing discomfort o...

Investing in an Abundance Mindset

Wisdom "Read to challenge yourself; read things that will matter long after you've finished." - Bill Murphy Jr. in "Warren Buffet Predicts the Future" (2021) More: https://hbr.org/1996/01/what-i-learned-from-warren-buffett Where I derive wisdom from: the bible the classic bestselling books about self-awareness, personal growth and development, leadership, business and finance influencers who produce high quality summaries about the above topics podcasts friends and family members Joy "Comparison is the thief of joy." - President Theodore Roosevelt "A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot." -  Proverbs 14:30 (ESV) Paradoxically, if you place a high value on seeking happiness and satisfaction, you might be less likely yourself to be happy. Gratitude is an underrated skill that will build your resilience and grit. I need to work at developing and practising it because my mind tends to spiral down into negativity. R...

Summary of "These 3 Personality Traits Affect What You Earn — but Only After Age 40" by Miriam Gensowski

The article "These 3 Personality Traits Affect What You Earn — but Only After Age 40" by Miriam Gensowski discusses a study that found that three personality traits - conscientiousness, extraversion, and low agreeableness - are associated with higher earnings, but only after the age of 40. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Copenhagen, tracked a group of high-IQ men for more than 80 years. The researchers found that the three personality traits were not significantly associated with earnings in the early years of the men's careers. However, after the age of 40, the men who were more conscientious, extroverted, and less agreeable earned significantly more than their peers. The researchers believe that this is because these personality traits become more important for success in later career stages. Conscientious people are more likely to be reliable, organized, and hard-working, which are all qualities that are valued in senior-level positi...

My Energy Ledger

Image
Important (Keep) Optimisation Writing/Producing content Information processing Strategising and execution Not important (Reduce/Eliminate) Starting on a new optimisation system Obsessing over perfection Watching videos about productivity and project management without limit As suggested by Ali Abdaal, the productivity wizard I am following, here is my energy ledger . Takeaways: The same tasks I enjoy can become energy drainers when indulged in excess. I can sometimes fall into the optimisation procrastination trap when I try too hard to over-optimise that I end up wasting much of my free time doing overtime work when I should be resting.
