Physics in Action

Stuck with constipation in the toilet? Ever went to the loo knowing you had to do some big business but nothing comes out? Need a quick fix to move your bowels?

There are many practical guides and health tips out there that teach you how to fight constipation in the long term, but few that tell you what to do when you need to go but can't.

Here are 2 simple last-resort tips that just might help you do the #2 with less effort:
["Physics"-like explanations provided. There's no guarantee that it eases pain. Do so at your own risk. But seriously, there's no harm trying when you're really desperate.]

1. Massage your tummy. (I usually do it in a circular motion, following the intestinal pathway.) Of course, you can search for massage method for constipation or other methods that you know of. Whatever rocks your bowels.
  • "Physics": Air expands when heated. Massaging your tummy warms up your abdominal area, which heats up your intestines and expands the gases in them. This creates a build-up of high air pressure in your intestines, which helps to push your stools out of your system.
2. Run a stream of water across your anal region. Some high-end toilets provide bidet systems or water jets. Some toilets have small water hoses or sprays within reach. Use them. Most people don't know how useful they are.
  • "Physics": The magic word is Bernoulli. Ever heard of the "ping-pong ball in the bottle/cup" experiment? See Bernoulli - ball in cup experiment. The aim is to get the ball out of the cup without touching it. The answer is to blow air across the opening of the cup. The ball will rise and fall out of the cup. Why does this happen? Because the moving stream creates a region of low air pressure at the opening of the cup. The high pressure in the cup pushes the ball towards the low pressure region. Now imagine that the ball is your stool and replace the airstream with the waterstream. It probably works the same way. At least you have gravity on your side.

So there you have it - practical science.
