Why I DON'T Want to Read Comics

Response to Why I DON'T Want to Read Comics

I swear this is the kind of response I get from most people around me who think comics/graphic novels are for kids. I wouldn't want to miss the look on their faces when they discover the deepest end of the comic pool.

As for the non-comics reader in that interview who seemed adamant about not touching comics ever, I think he doesn't even know how to read a comic book because of the complexity of their layout combined with those "word bubbles" he talked about. The panel layout of comics today are a lot more sophisticated than they were in the past. The ability to read them is part of visual literacy. Not learning to read visual material fluently is a huge loss on his part, because that's an essential skill in everyday tasks like reading newspapers and surfing websites.

Besides that, when you've grown attached to things that have been huge influences on you in your childhood days, the sentimental value remains with you even as you age.

Seriously? I find it hard to believe that that guy plays video games and doesn't think that's on the same level as reading comics. I'm sure many mature parents would say otherwise and ground him for playing too much.
