The Origin of Goodbye

"Goodbye" originated from the phrase "God be with ye" or "God be with you."

It's a shortened and contracted form of that original blessing or valediction. Over time, "God be with ye" evolved through various spellings like "godbwye" and "God be wi' you" before becoming "goodbye." The "God" part also changed to "good" likely due to the influence of other common greetings like "good morning" and "good night."
