UNDERSTANDING THE SPECIFICATIONS LIST


1. Processor (CPU)

  • Intel chips
    • More ex, higher graphic performance
    • Intel Core i5 - suitable for average user
    • i7 & i9 - suitable for video editors
  • AMD chips
    • Cheaper, lower graphic performance

2. RAM (Random Access Memory)

  • 4gb - light use
  • (Recommended) 6-8gb - suitable for an average user
  • 16gb - for gamers


3. Storage (take into account at least 20gb set aside for its Operating System)

  • Type
    • Solid-state drive (SSD)
      • Light and fast boot-up (Quieter; less vibration)
      • Lower storage space (Ranges from 128 GB to 2 TB) (More expensive than HDD for the same storage space) 
    • Hard disk drive (HDD)
      • Uses spinning disk technology (may be noisier and have more vibration; prone to disk fragmentation)
      • Slow boot-up
      • Larger storage (16GB - 12 TB)
    • Hybrid (SSD + HDD)
      • Heavier, most expensive
  • Size
    • 16 to 32 GB - basic, minimalist user (little to no storage of media; few documents)
    • 50 to 128 GB - suitable for average minimalist user (for storing some photos and documents)
    • 256 to 500 GB - for the office worker or heavy social media consumer (storing documents, photos and videos)
    • 500 GB to 2 TB - for the heavy gamer

4. Resolution

  • 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) - suitable for the average user
  • 4K UHD - gamers or workers in architecture/design-related industries

5. Ports

  • HDMI
  • USB (min. 2 for mouse and thumbdrive) (Alternatively, you can get a USB multi-port extension accessory)


6. Portability

  • Weight (determined by storage and no. of ports)
    • < 1kg (lightweight low storage student notebooks)
    • 1-1.5kg (average)
    • > 1.5kg (heavy; can be left at home or the office)


7. Budget

  • < $1000 (Budget user)
  • $1-$2k (Average user)
  • <$2k (Premium, gamer range)
