Moonlight Drawn by Clouds S1 Review

<< Spoilers for Moonlight Drawn by Clouds Season 1 >>
Episode 15

Yoon-sung's Grandfather: "You don't have feelings for a rebel's daughter who pretended to be a eunuch, do you? [Yoon-sung remains silent] Such a useless boy... I told you to tell me when you want to draw women. I told you if you want to sleep with a woman, I will bring you gisaengs from all across the nation!"

Yoon-sung: "Like you, Grandfather? Sleep with them for one night and throw them away? Whether it's a woman or person... even if it's your own child, embracing them when you need them, then driving them away when you're done... Is that the tradition of our family? Am I supposed to live that way?"

G-pa: "What do you dislike so much?"

Yoon-sung: "The drawing that you have drawn. The big drawing you have drawn with thoughts of me. [...] Although I may be coarse and shallow, I will live my life drawing my own pictures."

I'm no Yoon-sung/Ra-on shipper, but you gotta give this guy credit where it's due for standing up for the oppressed. He deserved a standing ovation for that major burn to G-pa.

Season Review

Overall, I enjoyed the series, though I felt that the ending for some characters felt contrived and unfair (most notably Yoon-sung's). Regarding Lee Yeong/Ra-on moments, their interactions were brief but bittersweet.

I think a large part of why it didn't feel so satisfying is the pacing. It killed off its mystery and suspense by resolving the investigation too fast. Information that should have been spread out over several episodes is often unravelled in just one episode while the rest of the drama were comprised mainly of long stares, multiple angles of the stares, long pauses and slow reactions, etc. This left me with a sense of dissatisfaction during the midsection of every episode. Finally, each episode picks up pace in the last few minutes and drops a cliffhanger/bombshell at the end, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating the next episode. It's a cheap bait, but a bait nonetheless. I'm not sure if there will be a second season, but I look forward to seeing how Lee-Yeong/Ra-on progress their relationship and what will happen to the infant crown princess.
