Fullmetal Alchemist

This anime revolves around the lives of Edward & Alphonse Elric. In a twist of fate, Ed lost his leg while Alphonse lost his body in a failed transmutation of their mother. In order to save his brother, Ed lost his arm, affixing Al's soul to a body of armour.

They have always thought that the world worked according to the law of equivalent trade, where everything comes at a price. However, the philosopher's stone is something which gets you anything you want without a cost. (Or so everyone thought.)

With this in mind, the brothers set off in search of the elusive stone that could help recover their bodies.

FMA is an anime that really evokes thoughts about how imperfect the world is and how life can be so unfair.

In terms of character, I think that Alphonse is more responsible than his older brother, though more naive. Still, their sense of responsibility towards each other is mutual, because Ed blames himself for his brother's predicament. Even though I don't really like either of them in the first anime, Al > Ed. My favourite characters are those from the military, especially Roy Mustang & Riza Hawkeye. Props go to all the military people who supported Mustang, which include Armstrong, Maes Hughes, Jean Havoc, Heymans Breda, Kain Fuery, Vato Falman & last but not least, Black Hayate.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of Royai (a.k.a. Roy/Hawkeye). Their relationship is so complex and so strong yet remains unspoken. It goes beyond multiple dimensions (as friends, colleagues, accomplices in the Ishbalan war, etc.) Even Havoc/Hawkeye seems strangely fascinating...

I will only mention the first original anime for the rest of this post.

Sadly, Hughes!!! Why?! Him showing off pictures of his daughter was priceless. My gosh, that bond between Roy & Hughes is just heartbreaking. It's a pity that Mustang lost an eye in the final battle, possibly either shot by Archer or from a misfired shot by Hawkeye. I seriously hope that the shot was by Archer rather than Hawkeye, or the situation would have been all the more ironic. Note: This ending does NOT follow the manga plot.

R.I.P. Maes Hughes
