Anime Season 2009

Higashi no Eden / Eden of the East
After reading lots of praise from various critics, I decided to check out this Spring 2009 series. The weirdness in the 1st episode really caught my attention and the cross-cultural context made it interesting to watch. As episodes past, the Selecao conspiracy slowly unravels and makes you wonder what happened before Takizawa Akira lost his memories. Was it sheer luck that he chose the "right" passport? Or could all the passports have been real as well? What would have happened if he had chosen another passport? Would he have found other clues to his past by checking out different homes?

The ending was disappointing. It made it seem so easy to fight the missiles. And what's up with becoming the prince? Will that really save the world? :-/

Senjou no Valkyria / Valkyria Chronicles
This RPG-based anime seems to keep the RPG feel to it. The background music seem like they were ripped from the game itself. So far, the story seems to flow well and it helps that Alicia is voiced by Skip Beat's Mogami Kyoko. I also like the idea of Squad 1 & 7 teaming up.

The finale was surprisingly good. Turns out Maximillian really was a wimp. Cheers to Zaka/Rosie (Largo/Rosie would have worked too) and props to the Isara hint at the end. Somehow, Edy, Marina & Largo also grew on me over the course of the series.

My only complaint is that no one acknowledged Faldio's sacrifice after the end of the war. It was like he never existed. Sure, Welkin was the only one who knew that he came to help, but his best friend didn't even give him a decent funeral, let alone tell anyone Faldio died. Some friend. >:(

I know many people slam Faldio for shooting Alicia and said he was better off dead, but it was a tough call choosing between sparing someone he loved and saving Gallia. He probably made the right choice. I actually preferred Faldio/Alicia to Welkin/Alicia even though the ending was set in stone from the start. Welkin is alright, but Faldio seemed to be hiding secrets from people, which really gives good plot potential.

Oh, and since you ask about whatever became of the resident pet- wait, there was a pet?!

Ouran Koukou Host Club / Ouran High School Host Club
When I first watched it, I was totally disgusted by the homo-ish suggestions and swore never to watch the series again. Several years later, its popularity continued to rise and I finally decided to give it another shot. This time, I found the characters really hilarious and became hooked. Within 2 - 3 days, I completed watching the whole series. Even on days when I was in a seriously bad mood, this show actually made me laugh. Though some of the episodes were complete bull, I found it hard to look away because of...

1) Haruhi's awkward situation.
2) Tamaki's drama-mama moments + Kuma-chan.
3) Hikaru & Kaoru's pranks.
4) Honey, his bunny plus cakes & sweet things.
5) Mori's strong silence. (Kurogane?)
6) Kyouya's hidden agenda. $_$
7) BA- NA- NA! ;D

Oh man... watching the finale was like watching S.A. all over again. It's become predictable, just when I thought it was getting good.

Anyway, the Ouran soundtracks are very impressive. They suit the show's classy feel and you feel like you've been transported into a grand concert hall. The character songs are great as well, though Honey's somewhat cute song can get a little grating on the ears.

Overall, all I can say is:
Bravo! Yahoo! Bravo...! :D

Amatsuki
For a 13-episode series, it was alright. The pacing was fine, but the ending really sucked. There was no closure and I was left wondering if Tokidoki & Shinonome will ever get back to their world.

Anyway, my favourite characters would be Shinonome Kon & Uchiha. Uchiha's past is quite sad really, but I'm glad that she is portrayed as a strong female lead rather than a weak damsel in distress. All I can say is LOL @ the moments where Shinonome (Kon) & Uchiha argue like an old couple. I hope there's gonna be another season to tie the loose ends.

Chrome Shelled Regios / Koukaku no Regios
The dome city (Regios) setting is an interesting plot concept to work with. The character names are quite unique (e.g. Layfon Alseif, Nina Antalk, Felli Loss, Leerin Marfes), although their personalities are typical.

Anyhow, the finale had a satisfactory closure and a bittersweet farewell, though I would like the story to be longer. Please let there be a 2nd season. :P

K-ON!
K-ON! seems like a typical school slice-of-life anime and the characters are almost carbon copies of Azumanga Daioh. Yui reminds me of Osaka, Mio = Sakaki & Ritsu = Tomo. Mugi may not have an Azumanga Daioh equivalent, but I don't like her as much as the rest. Maybe because she's rich & girly.

Hayate no Gotoku / Hayate The Combat Butler
I'm still in the midst of watching the 1st season and it's plain hilarious though full of bull. I look forward to watching the 2nd season.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
High school cannot get any weirder than this. If you are into UFOs, aliens, time travellers, weird stuff and high school slice-of-life, this show is for you.

Tears To Tiara
This somewhat reminds me of Valkyria Chronicles, only much better in terms of characters development and action scenes. All that king, queen and knight stuff usually makes me bored, but somehow this anime managed to keep me glued.
